Our Design Team
The architectural design team at MKL Design Studio is responsible for start to finish drawings for projects of all different scales. From single family residential to large scale multifamily. We pride ourselves on providing high quality, detailed drawings and on educating and guiding our clients seamlessly through the design process. Our team is an energetic group of people who have all levels of experience in both the design world and the construction field.
The Right Person
As an Intermediate Architectural Technologist, you will be technically strong in construction knowledge and Revit, and be able to work on all stages of a project in a collaborative environment. The right person will be a self-motivated team player who strives for excellence and is willing to learn from colleagues. You must be someone who thrives in a fast-paced environment, extremely detail-oriented, and be able to adapt with urgent workflow and design changes. Day to day responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
- Prepare complete construction drawing packages, with buildable and construction details, including site plans (with grading) in Revit, to be submitted for pricing and permits.
- Identify, design, develop and draw buildable construction details
- Ensure that drawings and deliverables match MKL Design Studio’s high standards of quality and completion.
- Provide input on and solve design/construction issues in a meaningful and respectful manner.
- Represent MKL Design Studio in a professional manner while attending project meetings with team members, builders, and clients.
- Visit job sites to gather required information or to ensure design intent is met, when required.
- Work on a full range of project types and scales: single family, semi-detached, renovations, multifamily, commercial, etc.
- Ability to review customer/builder redlines and make corresponding changes in various formats.
- Communicate changes and/or modifications effectively to team members and superiors.
- Communicate respectfully and professionally via email and phone with trades, clients, builders, and team members.
- Assist with interpreting and implementing zoning bylaws, building code and other applicable regulations.
- Understand and review floor joist layouts, roof truss layouts, beam designs, window quotes and engineering to ensure accuracy in coordination across all plans.
What’s Required
The ideal candidate will have the following credentials:
- Must have a minimum of an Architectural Technology Diploma/Certification
- 3-5 years of working experience dealing with projects of all sizes
- 2-3 years of experience working under someone who provided feedback and review of your work.
- High level of proficiency in Revit is vital.
- Some experience in AutoCAD is required.
- Experience with renovations, large & small scale multifamily and new homes is required.
- Experience with commercial projects would be an asset.
- Knowledge of AB local bylaws & building codes, construction detailing, structural details, building envelope, and wood framing construction is vital.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills to effectively work with clients, builders, and team members.
- Strong understanding of Canadian residential and commercial construction processes/practices, building materials, permit processes, etc.
- Able to meet strict deadlines and work effectively under pressure.

- Able to work on all phases of a project – preliminary design to final construction drawings.
- Be organized, work well under pressure, and be able to switch between projects seamlessly in a fast-paced environment.

Note: Must be in Calgary and able to work in office. No candidates from outside of Calgary will be considered.
